Old Clothes in Zanzibar


This picture encapsulates the function of the Gulbi Gulbi: a completely veiled style of BuiBui, which is a black garment worn to cover bodies, head and faces in public. The women are also wearing trouser to cover leg. This costume render women completely invisible, thus deterring unwanted men's attention.

This picture encapsulates the function of wedding. The bride is dressed in vKisutu, the traditional bridal kanga in red and black alongside her Mtanashati which means stylish groom is attired in elaborate fabrics with a striking turban.








The female Vibarua, labourers are wearing their hand made Leso, the original Khanga created from tree handkerchiefs sewn together to form length of cloths. The kata, a wrap around the head is used to protect the head and to support Mtungi, the water pot which is carried on the head.
